Although these pieces have been adapted for the piano, they were taken down from harpers, pipers, fiddlers, singers etc., so could be re-adapted for harp and other instruments.
For this facsimile edition, instances of badly broken or unreadable type have been corrected, with reference to the original sources, for ease of use. A master table of contents, in both Irish and English, has also been added, referring to the collections in order of publication: I (1796), 11(1809), III (1840). Page numbers refer to original page numbers in the three separate volumes. For the master contents, Bunting’s original titles in Irish have been corrected by John Canning and Harry Long, with some reference to Donal O’Suffivan’s The Bunting Collection ofthe Irish Folk Musk and Songs (London, 1927-39). Bunting’s frequently inaccurate English translations have, however, been retained, since this is how many of the airs and songs are known. The publishers wish to thank Harry Long for his invaluable research and assistance on this edition, as well as the staff of the Irish Traditional Music Archive in Dublin.
